The Rise of the Pocket Forest

June, 26th 2025

Across urban environments globally, a quiet movement is gaining momentum – the rise of Pocket Forests. Also known as micro, or tiny forests, these are densely planted green spaces that mimic the biodiversity, structure, and resilience of a natural forest, albeit in very compact areas. Inspired by the methods of Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, Pocket Forests are often created in underutilized or neglected urban spaces such as roadside verges, neglected corners, courtyards, and disused industrial zones. When they are created, these Pocket Forests instantly transform these spaces and how we react and interact with them. But why do they matter?

Despite their small size (sometimes as little as 15 to 25 square meters), Pocket Forests deliver outsize benefits such as:

  • They grow up to 10 times faster than conventional urban plantings.
  • They support and give life to multiple species of native flora and fauna.
  • They purify air, store carbon, manage stormwater, reduce heat, and provide shade.
  • They inspire us, improve mental health, offer educational opportunities, and bring beauty and inspiration into everyday life.

For cities facing rising heat, pollution, and disconnection from nature, Pocket Forests are a compelling solution. They don’t just beautify—they transform. These small ecosystems offer a model of what urban greening can be: fast, affordable, community-driven, and deeply regenerative.

The FactoryForest Vision
At FactoryForest gardens, we’re inspired by this idea. We believe that every workplace, no matter how industrial or underutilized, has the potential to host a living forest –  vast or pocket-sized. Our mission is to bring nature back into the world, one green space at a time. Why? Because when we plant with purpose, even the smallest forest can change the world.

Let’s create your first FactoryForest Pocket Forest together.
Whether it’s a forgotten corner of a warehouse, a bare courtyard or home or commercial backyard, or an unused rooftop, FactoryForest can help you bring it to life.
